Sama is a leading, and an exciting innovative performing arts network in the UK.

It is created to focus wider public attention on the classical, traditional and contemporary arts of South Asia as well as from other artistic traditions of the world.

The name Sama has been inspired by two important schools of thoughts: In the Vedic it means one of the four Vedas known as the SAMAVEDA, which means scriptures of Songs and in Sufism, it means come and listen, SAMA.

Sachal Music Collection

Launching this month is the Sachal Music collection comprising of thirteen albums, three singles and three music videos. The collection features some of the finest singers, lyricists and composers, a great orchestra, artists and soloists many of whom now form part of the Sachal Studios. Some of the musicians were on the verge of giving up their life’s work, until the creation of Sachal, a state-of -the art- studio set up in the historic city of Lahore. Sachal Studios ethos is to give a fresh impetus which draws its inspiration from the age old music tradition of India and Pakistan. Somewhere, Something— Poetry by Shanta Acharya

Somewhere, Something is an audio CD of a reading of selected poems by Shanta Acharya, who was born in Cuttack, in the eastern state of Orissa, India. She completed her Master’s degree in English Literature from Ravenshaw College, Cuttack; and in 1979 went to Oxford where she wrote her doctoral thesis on Emerson and India. In 1983 - 84 she was a Visiting Scholar at Harvard. Shanta Acharya also worked as an Investment Manager at Morgan Stanley Asset Management and other institutions and thereafter as an Associate Director, Initiative on Foundation and Endowment and Asset Management at the London Business School. The Raghu Dixit Project UK Tour

Touring this Summer is the Raghu Dixit Project. Raghu’s music is a seamless amalgamation of Indian ethnic music and styles from different parts of the world. His lyrics though intense, are simple and speak about every common man’s emotions and experiences, therefore, making his songs extremely popular among his fans. Inserting Indian folk, Sufi and classical phrases cleverly into his songs, Raghu’s singing style can be described as unique at best. Freedom Now! Charity Concert

Freedom Now is a charity concert in aid of Guria Project taking place on July 9th at the Bhavan Centre. The line up features one of the finest sarod players Ustad Aashish Khan who comes from a distinguished family of master musicians such as Acharya Ustad Allauddin Khan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar and Smt Annapurna Devi. A Grammy Nominee, and a great collaborator Aashish Khan has worked with some of the great names such George Harrison, Eric Clapton and many others. He currently teaches North Indian Classical Music at the California Institute of Arts and the University of California, Santa Cruz. Also performing are Amelia Mackiszewski on Sitar, Nicolas Magriel on sarangi and Yousuf Ali Khan on tabla. www.guria.uk.org

Naresh Sohal's 70th Birthday Celebration Concert

Seventy is a special vintage and celebrating at the Wigmore hall on July 17th is Composer Naresh Sohal’s birthday on reaching this milestone. Naresh Sohal was born in Punjab, India and his career is an extraordinary one by any standards. For almost a half a century, his has been a unique voice in western classical music. Meirion Bowen once wrote in the Guardian ‘His musical style has a maverick independence and a peculiar set of criteria all its own’.Sohal’s output has been prolific. He has written over sixty works. His recent work The Divine Song, setting of the first two chapters of the Bhagawad Gita, for narrator, and orchestra, was premiered to great acclaim earlier this year with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta. Naresh is a recipient of Padma Shri from the Government of India.
